How I Took Back My Bedroom with a Mini Room Refresh
How a Mini Room Refresh Breathed New Life Into My Bedroom (and My Sanity)
There’s a moment that sneaks up on you after the baby phase ends.
The crib is out. The bassinet is folded. The breastfeeding pillow’s been packed away. The tiny co-sleeper who once snuggled beside you has moved into their own room—and suddenly, you look around and wonder…
“Whose room is this now?”
Because it doesn’t quite feel like yours.
That was me a few months ago. After welcoming baby number 3 and spending nine months in a haze of cluster feeds, midnight diaper changes, and barely-there sleep, we had finally transitioned him into his own nursery. A big milestone. A bittersweet moment. And—if I’m being honest—a chance to reclaim something I hadn’t realized I was missing:
My space.
The Bedroom That Became a Nursery
Our master bedroom had turned into a makeshift survival zone. A bedside bassinet blocking my nightstand. An upright accent chair sat in the corner, perfectly placed for middle-of-the-night feedings. Diaper caddy here. Burp cloth there. A room made for baby—not for me.
But once we were done breastfeeding and baby #3 moved into his own room, I felt this surge of urgency to get my room back. Not just functionally, but emotionally.
The Mini Room Refresh That Changed Everything
I didn’t renovate. I didn’t spend thousands. I did a mini refresh—and it truly transformed how I feel every time I step into the room.
Here’s what I did (and what you can too):
🟤 1. Color-Drenched the Walls in Sherwin Williams “Nutshell”
This rich, cozy brown instantly grounded the room and made everything feel warmer and more grown-up. I wanted something that felt both earthy and luxurious, and Nutshell delivered. The color drenched every inch of the walls, enveloping the space in calm and depth.
🪞 2. Hung Two Mirrors to Add Visual Depth
I added a mirror above each nightstand to create symmetry and bounce light around the room. They made the space feel larger, more intentional, and honestly—more serene. It’s amazing what a good mirror can do.
🖤 3. Scored THE Best Blackout Curtains for Just $50
This might be my favorite steal: a pair of blackout linen pleated drapes from last year’s Indiana Design Center sale. Only $50! They block out the morning chaos and look far more expensive than they were. Functional, beautiful, and deeply satisfying.
🔦 4. Installed Matching Wall Sconces Above the Bed
For reading or scrolling (we’re all doing it), I added two wall sconces above the bed. This freed up space on our nightstands and gave us both personal lighting options. No more reaching across for the one lamp!

💡 5. Swapped Out the Nightstand Lamps for Smaller, Sleeker Ones
Our old lamps were bulky and kind of clunky. I replaced them with smaller, more sculptural options that add visual interest without crowding the space. They’re like jewelry for the room—small but mighty.
Why This Refresh Meant More Than Just Pretty Decor
This wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was about mental clarity.
Motherhood asks a lot of us. And during those baby months, I didn’t even notice how much of me I had surrendered to survival mode. But this refresh reminded me that I’m still here. I still matter in this space.
Now, when I walk into our bedroom, I feel calm. I feel comforted. I feel like… me.
